Årsta /Älvsjö

Älvsjö is one of the greenest districts of Stockholm with lots of new and modern residential developments. The area is constantly expanding, offering more space for locals and expats moving to Stockholm.  In the near future, public transport here will expand, turning the area into a major transportation hub.

Bromma

Mainly houses, this is a family-oriented district.

Gamla Stan

This is the historic old town.  Living here is very expensive as the supply of accommodations is limited. It offers mainly touristic spots with several souvenir shops, but also a few good bars to chill out in the evening.

Hägersten
The residential area of Hägersten, just south of Liljeholmen is very popular among Swedes. It used to be a more affordable neighbourhood, now prices have gone up a bit.  A short commute from the center.

Kungsholmen

The second big island in the city after Södermalm, Kungsholmen has a big residential area, although many companies are also located here. The island is more urbanized in the east but also with large parks and green areas and lots of activities during the warmer seasons. The nightlife here attracts mainly younger crowds and teenagers especially around Fridhemsplan.

Liljeholmen

There is a brand new and growing residential area in Liljeholmen, with lots of IT companies located here as well.  A short distance away to commute

Norrmalm

This district makes up most of Stockholm’s city center, together with Kungsholmen. Norrmalm is home to most government offices and buildings, including various ministries plus Central Station and Arlanda train station. This district is the country’s banking and financial center, and is also well-connected to the rest of the city.  There is not a lot of accommodation here, and what there is tends to be expensive.

Östermalm

A very classy, exclusive and  expensive area of the city. Many important business people and local celebrities consider it as the best area to stay in Stockholm and like to live and hang out here. There are lots of bars and clubs.

Rinkeby-Kista

This is a multicultural and entrepreneurial area? Kista is the city’s northernmost district, and home to leading high-tech and IT companies. Kista’s Science City is one of the most important centers for Information Communication Technologies, with about 750 companies, several research institutes and schools located here. A lot of internationals work in this district. There are currently plans to build 4,000 new homes in the Kista area, mainly in Kista Science City.

Solna/Sundbyberg

Very close and well-connected to the city center (both commuter train and subway). The housing here is often considerably cheaper than many areas in the city that are actually just a few minutes away.  Nice neighbourhoods with lots of parks and green spaces. The nightlife consists of just a few bars (mainly in Sundbyberg), but  reaching the city center is very convenient.

Södermalm

Södermalm is one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Stockholm. The area isknown for its “hipster” vibe and has been ranked by Vogue as the “coolest” neighborhood in Europe. Real estate prices doubled in this area between 2000 and 2014.  Södermalm combines cobbled lanes and green spaces with modern architecture. However Södermalm definitely suffers from housing shortage, and the average time on the waiting list for a first hand rental contract here is fourteen years.

Most of the  socialising takes place between Slussen (north) and Medborgarplatsen (center). The other areas (south, east, and west) are more residential. There are also several residential areas for families, and small apartments for single persons and young workers.

Vasastan

Fashionable and expensive area. Many IT companies are located here. The nightlife is not so active, but there are bars and restaurants. Beautiful parks, for example Vasaparken, with plenty of activities during summer and winter.
